Bill Hill in Communication Arts

The Bill Hill article is out!
It's in the Communication Arts Advertising Annual 50, which packs a punch.
Particularly a great article by Sagmeister on his year "off" in Bali.
Reminding me of my oft-repeated rant to students: smart designers write well.
Practice. Set yourself tasks.

Maybe we should have a "design write-off" essay-writing contest at Cornish. Students, professors and staff vie for large, attractive prize judged by panel of experts. How about deadline on April 15th? Seems appropriate.
(Write-off? Get it? Tax Day? Do I have to spell it out for you? Yeesh.)

Do we get a topic, or is this entirely up to the writer? What about standards? Is a post-modern essay on the effects of post-colonial thought on post-gender modes of semiotic articulation a shoe-in for the attractive prize? I have a few quires worth of that topic lying about, which I could certainly polish up in time for April 15th.

Or maybe a post-modern essay would be more effective if it's submitted post-deadline. Then again, that might make me post-prize.

Hmmm. You two might need to wear weight belts in this run for the roses.
What kind of prize should we offer? I guess Oreos are out.

If it is not disagreeable, perhaps a suitable Prize is the complete Works of Jane Austen, the celebrated Authoress. I am not acquainted not many Designers who count themselves familiar with her save through the televised Plays; and it is always pleasant to have Something to relieve one's Mind when one is quite busy with one's Work — and as Miss Austen is not entirely contemptible, this species of relief may in fact be amusing to the Winner of the Prize.

    But seriously...

Not everyone likes nachos, and some people are either vegan or allergic to cheese. (My dear Archer, I don't quite know if you're joking, so I'll pretend you're not. It's easier.) If a prize were to be offered, it might be best if the prize in question were something more lasting than food. Is there a book that's considered essential for designers to read? Something by Tufte, maybe...

actually I think the perfect gift would be for Natalia to read In Search of Lost Time in its enterity as a podcast which could later be turned into a celebrated book on tape/cd/mp3...

I never did understand why a grown man would write a book about his search for french toast... oh, wait... that's "pain perdu"...
